Misty loves her job in Katy, Texas, as a Community Health Worker. For over 16 years, Misty has served her community by helping pregnant women in low-income situations get the healthcare they need. Misty did not anticipate she would soon be in need of healthcare herself.
“I started to get excruciating headaches and that lasted several weeks, on and off. I just took ibuprofen and figured it was OK.”
When Misty’s blood pressure soared, she knew it was time to get to the ER right away. “Things are so expensive today. Some people won’t go to the hospital knowing they are going to get a humongous bill they can’t afford to pay.” Being in healthcare, Misty knew better. Extremely high blood pressure can lead to a stroke.
Fortunately, with proper treatment, Misty’s blood pressure came back down to safe levels.
Misty knew big bills were going to arrive after the hospital visit. “Even when I was at the ER, I was thinking about the bill.” Then the bill came, all $4,174 of it. “I was very nervous, upset and a little depressed about how I was going to pay this humongous bill.”
Like many, Misty wondered how to pay the high deductible on her insurance. “I have other bills I have to pay. Knowing this bill was coming was so overwhelming and stressful,” she said.
A resourceful person, Misty didn’t even wait for the bills to come before she got to work on finding a strategy to pay.
She called HR at her employer, United Healthcare, to see what resources they had for financial assistance for patients with middle class or low-income backgrounds. They referred her to Dollar For.
“I knew to google Dollar For to start with. Then I went to Instagram to see if these people were really legit. What I did not know was how quick and easy it was going to be,” said Misty.
“I took the qualification quiz online.” Right away, Dollar For’s website told Misty that she was probably eligible for charity care at her hospital, Houston Methodist West.
“I applied for debt reduction and Dollar For submitted the paperwork for me and in just two weeks, I got a letter saying my medical debt would be paid.”
Misty’s bill went from $4,174 to $0.
“When I got the news about the medical bills being removed, it was a huge relief, a huge blessing. I can’t express how much of a huge relief that Dollar For stepped in and did this.”
Besides having a child in school, Misty also has a friend who needs her assistance. Now Misty can continue to support them both.
“Dollar For is a legit company that stands by what they say. They want to take that burden off someone’s back. I will definitely be referring people to them. They are a charitable company and they really do crush bills!”
